1-Ethyl-3-Methylimidazolium Chloride ([EMIM]Cl) is a versatile ionic liquid that finds extensive applications in organic synthesis, catalytic reactions, polymer synthesis, and metal ion coordination. Its low volatility, high dissolving power, and chemical stability make it an ideal green solvent.
Application
1.Solvent and Catalyst in Organic Reactions
It is used as a solvent in various organic reactions due to its low vapor pressure, high thermal stability, and ionic conductivity. It can also act as a catalyst for the depolymerization of lignin.
2.Electrochemical Studies
It serves as a starting material for preparing molten salts such as 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride/tetrafluoroborate (EMI.Cl.BF4), which are used in electrochemical studies.
3.Hydrolysis of Hemicellulose
It is used as a solvent in the hydrolysis of hemicellulose (xylan) to produce xylose using Brønsted acid catalysts.
4.Corrosion Inhibition
Recent studies have shown that 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride can act as a corrosion inhibitor for metals such as duplex stainless steel. The cations of the ionic liquid adsorb on the metal surface, forming a protective barrier against corrosion.
5.Perovskite Solar Cells
It has been introduced into perovskite solar cells to enhance device efficiency. The ionic liquid improves the crystallinity of the perovskite film, reduces defects, and enhances overall performance.
6.Deep Eutectic Solvents and Gas Absorption
It is used in the formulation of deep eutectic solvents and for the absorption of gases like SO₂.
7.Polymer Electrolyte Films
It has been used in the preparation of polymer electrolyte films, enhancing their conductivity and performance.
