Glyoxylic acid is a versatile organic compound that possesses the properties of both aldehydes and carboxylic acids. It is the simplest aldehyde acid. Glyoxylic acid exhibits a wide range of chemical reactivity and has extensive industrial applications. It plays a significant role in fields such as chemical industry, pharmaceuticals, flavorings, dyes, electroplating, textiles, and cosmetics.
Application
1.Flavors and Fragrances
Glyoxylic acid is an important raw material for the synthesis of vanillin and ethylvanillin, and is widely used as a fragrance and fixative in cosmetics, as well as in the flavorings of daily chemical products.
2.Pharmaceutical Intermediates
Glyoxylic acid is used to prepare a variety of pharmaceutical products, such as para-hydroxyphenylglycine (used for the synthesis of amoxicillin and cefalexin), para-hydroxyacetanilide (used to manufacture the drug Atenolol for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases and hypertension), and para-hydroxyphenylacetic acid, among others.
3.Allantoin Production
Glyoxylic acid can condense with urea under certain conditions to form allantoin. Allantoin is an important fine chemical product, which can be used in pharmaceuticals (such as anti-ulcer drugs), as an additive in high-end cosmetics, and as a plant growth regulator.
4.Dyes and Pigments
It serves as an intermediate in the synthesis of dyes and pigments, used in the production of certain specific organic pigments.
5.Plastics and Coatings
Glyoxylic acid is used in the synthesis of certain components of plastics and coatings, such as the modification of resins.
6.Electroplating Industry
In electroplating of non-ferrous metals, glyoxylic acid can act as a reducing agent, replacing harmful chemicals (such as formaldehyde), to achieve chemical copper plating on some difficult-to-plate materials.
7.Textile Industry
It is used in the dyeing and post-treatment processes of textiles, and can improve certain properties of fabrics.
8.Cosmetics Industry
In addition to being used as a fragrance and fixative, it is also used in the formulations of some special cosmetics.
